What Spinal Decompression Is
Spinal decompression is computer-guided traction that slowly opens space between the vertebrae. The goal is to relieve pressure on the discs and the nerves around them, giving a herniated or bulging disc and an irritated nerve more room to settle down.
It is non-surgical and non-invasive. You stay reclined and fully clothed during the session, and Dr. Rob Neuenschwander sets the traction based on your evaluation so the stretch stays comfortable. Most patients describe the feeling as a relieving stretch rather than a force.
Conditions We Evaluate for Decompression
Spinal decompression is most often requested for these conditions. Each one is confirmed by an exam before any session is scheduled.
Herniated and bulging discs
Disc problems in the low back or neck are the most common reason patients ask us about spinal decompression.
Sciatica
Pain, numbness, or tingling running down the leg is often tied to pressure on a nerve root. Decompression may help as part of a broader plan.
Pinched nerves
When a nerve is irritated by nearby disc pressure, creating space between vertebrae is one of the goals of each session.
Chronic lower back pain
For back pain that keeps returning, decompression is often paired with spinal adjustments and PiezoWave therapy for the surrounding soft tissue.
What to Expect at a Session
You arrive, settle in, and recline on the decompression table fully clothed. The traction is computer-guided, so the stretch builds gradually rather than all at once, and you stay in control throughout. If anything feels wrong, you tell us and the session is adjusted. Sessions are built around your specific condition and goals, not a generic template.
